Ginger opened the door with trepidation. Relief flooded through her at the sight of Sara standing on the stoop, looking awkward as always in a too-big t-shirt and baggy navy shorts, her shoulders hunched in as if waiting for another blow to her back. Her hair was mousy brown and split at the ends, and her eyes bulged out just enough to give her an ogling gaze that disconcerted on first encounters. It had taken her a while to warm to the girl. She always seemed to be silently watching and assessing, but Ginger eventually put this down to her large, pale blue eyes. âSheâs got fish eyes,â David once said. âGets them from her mother.â But Sara had treated Charlie kindly, even when she didnât know Ginger was close by and listening. That counted for a lot in Gingerâs book.
âSara, your dad isnât at home right now. Heâs gone to work.â
âThatâs okay. I came to see you â to find out if you need my help for a few hours before I have to go to the DQ at three.â Saraâs eyes skimmed over Gingerâs big belly before settling on something in the hallway behind her right shoulder.
Ginger forced herself not to turn around to see what she was staring at. She was about to say no, but Sara seemed so gawky and ill at ease in her own body. David said it was hell for the kids living with their mother. She opened the door wider. âCome in and keep me company. Thereâs nobody else here.â
âWell, for a little while.â
They entered the kitchen, and Sara made tea while Ginger set out a plate of cookies, homemade by Madeleine before she and Richard left for Bayshore. Richard had confided in Madeleine about the ransom request on Gingerâs insistence. She wanted her mom to agree with paying, if only for a third point of view, not to mention it was their nest egg being depleted. Her mom hadnât hesitated to risk the money.
âWhereâre your parents?â Sara asked before biting into a ginger cookie.
âGone to the mall. They had an ⦠errand.â If they came home with Charlie, sheâd tell Sara about the ransom. Sheâd already decided to inform the police either way. Even now, she didnât feel comfortable with her dadâs decision to go this alone. If someone was scamming them, they deserved to be caught, and for that to happen, the police had to be involved. If this person really did have Charlie and returned him, the police would demand to know why.
âMy dadâs been trying to reach me. Do you know what he wants?â
Ginger forced herself to concentrate. âNo, he didnât tell me anything. Maybe heâs going to ask you to join him in his search for Charlie. Heâs been driving the streets, looking for any sign of him. He missed supper last night.â The look of incredulity on Saraâs face before she dropped her eyes to stare at the table startled Ginger. What was going on in
